What is UpCycling?

Everyone has heard of recycling, but what about upcycling?

Upcycling is a specific form of recycling that turns waste into a material or product that is of a higher quality. You do not need to send items to a recycling center to be broken down if you want to upcycle. Instead, you just have to use your creativity to figure out new ways to repurpose or fashion item.

Why is matters:

Compared to recycling, the impact on the environment is reduced; downcycling – converting an object into raw materials, a fundamental part of the recycling process requires a considerable amount of energy. For example, to melt a couple of 750-milliliter glass bottles requires about 240Wh. Consider that each person in the United States buys about 130 glass containers a year, the total energy consumption to recycle these bottles is over 7 Kwh /year with a carbon dioxide emission of about 40 kilogram per person. The numbers start to add up!

As the price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. Fast fashion is a major contributor to the world's clothing waste problem. Many of us give our old clothes to charity or drop them in a store take-back bin, but you might be surprised to learn most of it is sold and can end up in the landfill.
